The Fascinating History of Pomeranians: From Royalty to Family Pets

Pomeranians are one of the world’s most recognisable and adored small dog breeds. With their fluffy coats, bright eyes, and lively personalities, it’s easy to see why they’ve captured so many hearts. But their story goes far beyond their cuddly appearance. The history of the Pomeranian is a fascinating journey that takes us from icy landscapes and royal courts to modern family homes.

1. Where It All Began

The ancestors of today’s Pomeranians were anything but tiny. Originating from the Arctic regions, these dogs were bred to pull sledges and herd animals. They belonged to the Spitz family — a group of hardy breeds built to survive harsh climates.

Over time, they moved south to the region known as Pomerania, which lies on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea (modern-day northern Poland and Germany). It was here that the breed began to develop into a smaller, companionable version of its working ancestors.

2. Pomeranians and European Royalty

The true rise to fame for the Pomeranian came when they caught the attention of European nobility.

In the 18th century, Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III of Britain, brought two Pomeranians with her from Germany. However, it was her granddaughter, Queen Victoria, who truly transformed the breed.

During a visit to Italy, Queen Victoria fell in love with a small, fluffy Pomeranian named Marco. Enchanted by his diminutive size and lively nature, she became a dedicated breeder herself. Thanks to her influence, the popularity of the breed soared — and breeders began working to make Pomeranians even smaller and fluffier to match royal tastes.

By the end of Queen Victoria’s reign, Pomeranians had become one of Britain’s most fashionable and sought-after pets.

3. How the Pomeranian Evolved

Originally, Pomeranians were larger, weighing up to 13 kilograms. Over time, selective breeding gradually reduced their size to the tiny lap dogs we know today, typically weighing between 1.5 and 3.5 kilograms.

Their famous double coat — soft undercoat and longer outer fur — developed to protect them from harsh winters, but it also became a prized feature for show dogs.

In addition to changes in size, the breed’s face became more fox-like, with a shorter snout, bright alert eyes, and upright ears.

4. Pomeranians in Modern Times

Today, Pomeranians continue to enjoy huge popularity all over the world, not only as family companions but also as show dogs. Their beauty, intelligence, and bold spirit make them stand out wherever they go.

Although small, they carry the confidence of a much larger dog. Poms are known for their loyalty, intelligence, and lively personalities — a direct inheritance from their strong, working ancestors.

They often form close bonds with their families and love to be at the centre of attention, traits that made them beloved by royalty and commoners alike.

5. Famous Owners Through History

Besides Queen Victoria, many famous figures have been charmed by Pomeranians:

  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart dedicated an aria to his beloved Pom.

  • Michelangelo reportedly had a Pomeranian by his side while painting the Sistine Chapel.

  • More recently, celebrities like Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie have proudly paraded their Poms to the world.

It’s a breed that continues to captivate generation after generation.

6. Why the Pomeranian Remains Timeless

The Pomeranian’s enduring popularity can be attributed to a perfect combination of traits:

  • Compact size for modern living

  • Spirited yet affectionate nature

  • Intelligence and eagerness to please

  • Stunning appearance, from their plume-like tails to their thick, luxurious coats

In many ways, the modern Pom is the best of both worlds: the heart of a working dog with the charm of a lap companion.

From sled-pulling in icy forests to snuggling in royal laps and living rooms today, the story of the Pomeranian is one of incredible transformation. Yet through all the changes, their spirit has remained the same — bold, loving, and entirely unforgettable.
