How to Handle Separation Anxiety in Pomeranians and Chihuahuas

Pomeranians and Chihuahuas are famously loyal and affectionate, which is one of the many reasons we love them so much. However, their deep attachment to their owners can sometimes lead to separation anxiety if not carefully managed from a young age.

Here’s how to help your small dog feel safe, confident and secure when left alone.

1. Understanding Separation Anxiety

Separation anxiety occurs when a dog becomes distressed when separated from their owner.

Common signs include:

  • Whining, barking or howling

  • Pacing or restlessness

  • Chewing furniture or possessions

  • Toileting indoors (even if normally house-trained)

  • Excessive drooling

Mild anxiety can often be managed at home with training, while more severe cases may need professional support.

2. Start Training Early

The best way to prevent separation anxiety is to teach your puppy from an early age that being alone sometimes is normal and safe.

How to start:

  • Leave your puppy alone in another room for a few minutes at a time, gradually increasing the duration.

  • Always stay calm when leaving and returning — avoid big emotional goodbyes.

  • Give them a safe space like a crate, playpen or comfy bed where they feel secure.

Consistency and patience are key.

3. Build Positive Associations

Help your puppy associate alone-time with positive experiences.

  • Offer special toys or treat-dispensing puzzles they only get when you’re out.

  • Leave a piece of clothing that smells of you nearby for comfort.

  • Play calming background noise (e.g., classical music or dog-specific playlists).

The goal is to help them view alone time as safe, not scary.

4. Gradual Departures

Don’t immediately leave your puppy alone for hours. Build up slowly:

  • Step outside the door for a few seconds, then return.

  • Gradually extend your time away over several days and weeks.

Stay consistent — the more often your puppy experiences short, successful separations, the more confident they will become.

5. Avoid Reinforcing Anxiety

It’s natural to want to comfort your dog if they seem upset, but avoid rushing back the moment they cry. Instead, wait until they are calm before returning, to avoid reinforcing the idea that crying brings you back.

Likewise, don’t make a huge fuss when you leave or return — act calmly and casually.

6. Seek Professional Help if Needed

If separation anxiety becomes severe (e.g., destructive behaviour, harming themselves, refusing to eat), speak to your vet or a qualified behaviourist.

Gentle, expert-led training programmes can make a huge difference.
